Sedation dentistry allows people who are otherwise very anxious at the dentist to have a comfortable, stress-free experience.
Sedation dentistry does not involve general anesthesia; instead, the sedation dentist provides nitrous oxide or a mild sedative in pill form. Either option allows you to enter a dreamlike state during your time in the dentist’s chair. You will remain conscious and able to understand what is going on around you. The dentist can give you instructions and information while you are sedated, and you will be able to respond and remember what was discussed. But you will be completely relaxed, and time will seem to pass more quickly while the sedation dentist easily completes whatever work you need to have done.
After your work is completed, if you have had nitrous oxide, you most likely be able to drive yourself home. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, so you will probably feel normal within a few minutes after the dentist has finished. However, if you take a sedative in a pill form, you will want to be sure to arrange to have someone take you home. This form of sedation takes longer to wear off, so for your own safety you should not try to drive.
Other Advantages of Sedation Dentistry
In addition to helping reduce your anxiety, sedation dentistry can help your dentist complete more work in a single visit. If you have put off much-needed dental work due to feelings of anxiety about going to the dentist, a sedation dentist can get you caught up so that your teeth can be well cared for. Use sedation dentistry to stay calm in the dentist’s chair, and to ensure your oral health now and in the years to come.
