Sometimes extracting teeth is a necessity to preserve oral health and the proper placement of teeth. As a family and holistic dentist, Dr. Amer conservatively approaches the need for tooth extraction with an emphasis on the importance of a patient’s overall wellness. When performing an extraction, our practice takes all measures necessary to gently extract a tooth and promote patient comfort and relaxation.
When Extractions are Necessary
An extraction may be needed for a number of reasons. Children undergoing tooth transition and orthodontic treatment often require extractions, especially when permanent teeth are coming in faster than baby teeth are lost. During orthodontic treatment, an extraction may be performed to create room in the mouth for shifting teeth to healthier positions. When extracting teeth during childhood and adolescence, our team will provide ample information regarding the procedure itself as well as information regarding home care so that parents and caregivers can help children heal as quickly as possible.
Removing wisdom teeth is another common reason for extraction. Wisdom teeth come in much later than other permanent teeth and because tooth position is established and the jawbones have stopped growing, wisdom teeth can threaten oral health. Since these teeth are unnecessary for proper oral function, our dentist may recommend removing them so that patients don’t encounter orthodontic problems. When wisdom teeth emerge, they often erupt improperly and this can cause crowding among teeth and create discomfort such as facial pain and headaches. If wisdom teeth do not emerge properly, they are more likely to become infected or decayed.
Another reason for extraction involves damaged and diseased teeth that cannot be saved with endodontic therapy and restorations such as fillings or crowns. Diseased and damaged teeth can be painful and inhibit comfortable oral function.
When extracting teeth, Dr. Amer uses the latest surgical techniques and technology to provide the best care possible to patients. Anesthetic and sedative medication will also be administered so that our patients can relax without worry or discomfort.
