A weekend getaway or longer trip doesn’t give you a vacation from your oral hygiene routine. On the contrary, it’s tremendously important to keep up your good habits while you’re on the road.
While many aspects of oral hygiene are the same when you’re traveling as they are at home, there are a few considerations that are unique about taking care of your teeth while you’re away. You may also need to plan for seeing your family dentist either before or after your scheduled travel.
Caring For Your Teeth While Away From Home
The basics of oral hygiene don’t change whether you’re in your bathroom at home or at a swanky hotel. You still need to brush at least twice a day using an ADA-approved toothpaste and floss daily.
However, there are certain unique aspects of oral care while you’re on the road. Here are a few tips to manage those differences:
- Transport your toothbrush in a way that gives it enough air. The travel toothbrush covers can limit air circulation around the brush head and give bacteria a chance to build up. A resealable plastic bag can be a better choice because it gives your brush space to breathe.
- Use bottled water to rinse after brushing when water quality is in question. The last thing you want to bring home from your vacation is a stomach bug brought on by rinsing with bad water.
- If you forget to pack your brush or toothpaste, request one from the hotel or head to a local drugstore. In the meantime, you can rinse vigorously with water or apply a small amount of toothpaste to your clean finger to brush your teeth.
Scheduling Professional Care Around Your Trip
You know that it’s important to see your family dentist every six months, but a scheduled trip can interfere with that. Look ahead to see if you might be slated for a checkup and cleaning while you are away.
If so, call our office to schedule your checkup before you leave or get an appointment on the schedule for shortly after you return. That way, you’ll have one less thing to do when you get back into town.
