Replacing a missing tooth is an important task. Not only will doing so help you look your best, but it will also help to maintain the functionality of your smile. Dental bridges offer patients an affordable, aesthetically pleasing option for replacing missing teeth.
These devices use an attachment to surrounding teeth to secure a prosthetic crown (“pontic”) in the empty space in the smile. Dental bridges are suitable for a number of different scenarios of tooth loss.
Your dentist will design your dental bridge based on the characteristics of your smile. If the absent tooth is between two biological teeth, which are known as the abutment teeth, you can receive a traditional dental bridge in which two crowns are placed on the abutment teeth to anchor the pontic.
If for some reason a traditional dental bridge is not feasible or advisable in your case, there may be other tooth-replacement options that will meet your needs.
The process of getting a dental bridge begins at an initial consultation in which your dentist will examine your teeth and take photographs, x-rays or dental impressions (or a combination thereof) to inform the design of your bridge. The patient also has some input into this process, especially in terms of the shade of the dental bridge.
If necessary, the abutment teeth will be prepped for crown placement at the initial consultation by removing a thin layer of enamel to accommodate the crowns. Those teeth can be fitted with temporary crowns to maintain their appearance until the permanent bridge is ready.
After the bridge has been crafted, you will return to our office to have it placed. Further adjustments can be made to the appliance in accordance with the patient’s preferences before it is placed but not afterward. With a traditional dental bridge, the crowns will be bonded to the abutment teeth using a dental cement.
