Sometimes tooth removal is necessary to preserve oral health. Whether it’s a badly diseased tooth that is failing or a wisdom tooth that’s placement endangers the health of other tissues, an extraction is often a precautionary measure that helps prevent oral health complications such as abscesses and orthodontic problems. Our holistic dentist takes a conservative and gentle approach when determining whether tooth removal is necessary.
Why are extractions needed?
When it comes to diseased or injured teeth and whether extractions are necessary, it is important to understand the basics of tooth anatomy. Outside of teeth is a mineralized protective barrier called tooth enamel. Surrounding teeth above the gum line, tooth enamel protects teeth from cavity-causing bacteria. Enamel can be weakened by wear and tear along with exposure to acidic foods and beverages. When enamel is damaged, teeth are vulnerable to injury and dental caries.
If a tooth is fractured or severely decayed, the sensitive structures inside teeth can become deeply infected. If a tooth cannot be saved with root canal treatment or restorations, the infection will spread and may become abscessed. To prevent complications associated with infections, a tooth may be removed to preserve neighboring oral structures.
Are wisdom teeth always extracted?
Most of the time, wisdom teeth are removed. This is because they erupt through the gums years after other adult teeth emerge. Since the rest of a patient’s teeth are already established, the eruption of wisdom teeth often leads to orthodontic problems by crowding teeth. With little room to emerge through the gums, wisdom teeth sometimes become stuck in the gums and this can lead to many complications such as periodontal disease and abscesses.
